Wordless…for Janelle

She hears sweet sounds
there are no words
We are listening well
She better than I

young white collared boys
make music with their bells
echoing tones
metal against metal

a wordless song
that slips inside the soul
gentle and persistent
carried on the Spirit’s wind

she hears the silent words
and names the song
“God is in my heart”
She is only four and listening well
She better than I

The years have passed
She has children of her own
who gift her with chimes
bells playing in the wind
sweet sounds without words

I listen better now
and hear a wordless song
that slips inside the soul
gentle and persistent
carried on the Spirit’s wind
