She unearths the compost of generations
digs through rocky soil
hopping on roots making fun out of toil
She gathers names of people
places from near and places from far
imagining histories, famines and wars
She constructs memories
traditions of sages, researches
times and dates captured for ages
lives that lived long and others too brief
Some lived with riches, others lived cheap
She taps down the soil, now watered and fed
a garden of eden whose histories have led
to the glorious now
And though not the end of the line
with a kind twinkled eye
she says, “I think I’ll stop now…after all
how many dead cousins do I need to find!”
