Daddy’s Robe (for cherie)

I ease into your robe
thin as butterfly wings
and just as beautiful to me
Your scent, though fading
fills the worn threads
frail as you were when you died

I picture you from years ago
confident and proud
pencil-pushing numbers
with slide rule at the ready
and airplane blue prints
spread over drafting tables

But it’s the storyteller in you
Oh your stories
that fill my heart with
memories of love and cause
me to hug your robe tighter
and feel your arms around me

the way only you could, Daddy, only you
